DEPUTY SHERIFF EMMETT BOONE DIES OF HEART AILMENT AT 61 - Nelson County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Emmett Boone died at 4:30 a.m. Monday, August 7, at Flaget Memorial Hospital at Bardstown where he had been under treatment since suffering a heart attack July 27. He was 61 years old. Mr. Boone had served as deputy sheriff on a ticket headed by Sheriff Tom Shields nearly four years and would have been deputy sheriff since the ticket headed by Virgil Hahn won the Democratic primary May 22 and has no Republican opposition. He is the second deputy sheriff of Nelson County to die during his term of office.
OPERATED TWO FARMS
A farmer all his life, Mr. Boone owned and operated a farm at Howardstown until a few years ago when he bought the farm near New Haven, known as the Burke Johnson place, and moved there. He was operating both farms. Mr. Boone was the son of the late Joseph (Josie) Boone, of Howardstown, who was widely known and active in political life. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Catherine Church, New Haven. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lottie Johnson Boone; four daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Callista) Mudd, Owensboro; Mrs. Tommy (Ann) Hagan, New Haven; Mrs. Paul (Charlotte) Blair, Lexington; Mrs. Howard (Amanda) Battcher, Louisville; two sons, Thomas L. Boone, Louisville, and James Robert Boone, Madison, Ind.; one brother, Leo Boone, Howardstown; three half-sisters, Mrs. Hugh Stiles, Mrs. Jack Spalding, Howardstown, and Mrs. Henry Cecil, New Haven; 12 grandchildren.
LOST SON IN WAR
Mr. and Mrs. Boone lost a son, Kenneth, in World War II. He was killed in the European theatre, February 26, 1945.
SOLEMN MASS
Funeral services were held with Solemn Requiem Mass at ten o'clock Wednesday morning, at St. Catherine Church, New Haven. Rev. Fred J. Gettelfinger, pastor, was celebrant; Rev. Robert Bowling, Holy Cross, deacon; Rev. George Bowling, Finley, sub-deacon; Rev. H. L. Mitchell, New Haven, master of ceremonies. Rev. William Pank, Louisville, a former pastor of St. Ann Church, Howardstown, delivered the sermon. In the sanctuary were Rev. Samuel Lee, Howardstown, and Rev. James Hagan, Louisville. Interment was in St. Ann Cemetery at Howardstown. Active pallbearers were Preston Hagan, Arthur Howard, Hugh Spalding, Martin Bowling, Fred O'Bryan, and Joe Whelan. Honorary pallbearers were Sheriff Tom Shields, Deputy Sheriffs Roy Burkhead and Dennis Mattingly, Judge James A. Sutherland, Martin Bowling, John Blanton, Fennessy Howard, J. H. Cahoe, Adrian Mouser, W. H. Samuels, Nick Bowling, Virgil (Dutch) Hahn, Howard Underwood and Riley Durbin. The body was at the Greenwell Home where members of St. Catherine and St. Ann Parishes and friends gathered for prayers Wednesday night. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in New Haven.
COURTHOUSE CLOSED
All courthouse offices in Bardstown were closed for the funeral and the sheriffs' office was closed all day Wednesday. The courthouse bell tolled as the funeral began.
