Dr. Joseph Paul Mudd
88; of Clarksville
newsroom@newsandtribune.com Dr. Joseph P. Mudd died May 17, 2013, surrounded by his family at the age of 88.
A memorial reception and celebration of his life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Kraft Funeral Service, Charlestown Road Chapel, New Albany. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. The immediate family will have a private family burial the following day.
Dr. Mudd was a family physician over a period of 56 years in Clarksville, to his Indiana/Kentucky patients.
He was the son of Dr. Edward D. Mudd and Estelle A. Howard, born Jan. 23, 1925, at Springfield, Ky., the 10th of 11 children all of which are deceased. He grew up in New Haven, Ky., where his father practiced medicine for more than 60 years. It was at this home that he attended St. Catherine Catholic School. He completed high school in 1943 at St. Joseph Prep in Bardstown, Ky. He then served in the United States Army until 1946, distinguishing himself during combat operations in France and Germany as a staff sergeant in the 100th Division, 397th Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery in the battle for Heilbronn, Germany, in April of 1945. He returned from the war in March 1946 and enrolled in the University of Louisville where he stayed until 1954 graduating with an M.D. following in his father and brother's footsteps. He did his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton. Dr. Mudd began his medical practice in Clarksville in 1955 and gave 56 years of service to the people of that area. Dr. Mudd was married May 20, 1950, to "Trudy" Riney, of Owensboro. To this union were born five daughters and one son. Trudy Mudd died March 27, 2012, nearing their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Dr. Mudd was among the last of a passing institution, the independent family doctor. He was a philosopher as well as a physician with a dry sense of humor and strong beliefs, which he did not hesitate to voice. Dr. Mudd loved to dance with his wife Trudy, fly airplanes, plant his vegetable garden and grow his prized tomatoes, hunt, ski and tinker around in his garage and yard. He was most passionate about boating, fishing, his medical practice and his patients. His family's most memorable moments were fishing and boating on family vacations, his campfire cooking over the glowing coals of an outdoor fire, Memorial Day parades and the famous July 4th goldfish swim in the family pool.
Surviving children, Janet Mudd, of Palm Beach, Fla., Deborah Tuggle, of Louisville, Jolene Barton, of Loveland, Ohio, Paul Mudd, of Charlestown, Dr. Ann Mudd, DMD, of Louisville, and Leslie Mudd, of New Albany; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

tribune.comTrudy Riney Mudd, 88, of Clarksville, our loving mother, wife, grandmother and sister, went to be with our Savior Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. She went peacefully and now suffers no pain nor dementia.
Memorial reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, 2778 Charlestown Road, New Albany. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral liturgy will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Clarksville. Private family burial will be in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
She was born Nov. 15, 1923 in St. Joseph, Daviess County, Ky., the daughter of Thomas Leander "Len" Riney and Mary Irmine Mulligan Riney. She was married to Dr. Joseph P. Mudd on May 20, 1950. They had 62 wonderful years together and shared far too much for this short prose. She was stricken with early onset Alzheimer's in the late 80s and her family sponsors an Alzheimer's benefit each year to support research for a cure. She enjoyed her family most of all, she was a wonderful mother, wife, sister and friend. She was very active in gardening, entertaining and giving back to her community and her church. She never passed up the opportunity to go dancing with Joe as they both loved dancing together and she would twirl gracefully in his arms.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Joseph P. Mudd, of Clarksville; daughters, Janet Mudd, of Palm Beach, Fla., Deborah Tuggle, of Louisville, and Jolene Barton, of Loveland, Ohio; son, Paul Mudd, of Charlestown; daughter, Dr. Ann Mudd, of Louisville; and daughter, Leslie Mudd, of New Albany; grandchildren, Alex, Samantha, Ashley, Garrett, Justin, Aaron, Natalie, Nicholas, Hunter, Whitney and Bradley; great grandchildren, Hannah and Halle; sisters, Patricia Cheshire, Mary Louise Mudd, and Mary Virginia Kutscher; and brothers, Father Phillip and David Riney.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1946 and her mother in 1985. The family thanks God she was spared any additional pain and is now in the presence of our Lord. She will be sorely missed and will be remembered for the love she shared and the light of life that she brought to so many.
