Saragene Stiles Mattingly, 76, life-long resident of Bardstown, died Thursday, February 24, 2000, at Flaget Memorial Hospital. She was a former employee of The Standard Publishing Company and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was the daughter of the late William O. & Nancy Rapier Stiles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Mattingly and a brother, Jack Stiles. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Ann) Payne, Mrs. Benny (Marigene) Hite and Mrs. Billy (Karen) Gentry, all of Bardstown; two sons, Gaylord Mattingly of Bardstown and Bo Mattingly of Charlotte, NC; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Betsy Hall and Nancy Arnold, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Bill Medley will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetry. Visitation is today from 1-9 p.m. at Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home. Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mattingly, 52, World War Bombardier, Dies at Home
Joseph B. Mattingly, Jr., age 52, who had been in ill health for some time, died unexpectedly at 1:25 a.m. Sunday, June 28, at his residence, 112 West Brashear, in Bardstown. Mattingly, a graduate of St. Joseph Prep School, worked in engineering before he entered the Air Corps, serving three years, 1942-45, in World War II. He rose to the rank of Captain and was a bombardier in many of the most dangerous raids over Europe, chiefly when the Allies bombed the famed Ploesti oil fields in Rumania, which was a vital feat in winning the war. Until he became in ill health he was a member of the Bardstown Quarterback Club and was greatly interested in spectator sports. Born and reared in Bardstown, he spent practically his entire life here, and was married for 21 years to the former Miss Saragene Stiles, who survives.
Besides his wife, he leaves a family of five children, two sons, William Gaylord Mattingly and Joseph Benedict Mattingly III, both at home; three daughters, Mrs. Benny Joe (Marigene) Hite, Bardstown, Misses Ann Rapier Mattingly and Karen Mattingly, at home; his mother, Mrs. Joseph B. Mattingly, Sr., and a brother, Sim A. Mattingly, also of Bardstown. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church here with Rev. Robert Edelen, New York City, a cousin of the deceased's wife, and Rev. Henry Mitchell concelebrating the Requiem Mass. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ben T. Guthrie, Alfred Wathen, Guthrie M. Wilson, Fabian Mathis, Tom Keene, Prewitt Grigsby, Freeman Carothers and Arch C. McKay. The body was at the Mann, Greenwell and Arnold Funeral Home where prayers were recited Monday evening.
