MRS. ETHEL MATTINGLY DIES, FUNERAL TODAY AT BARDSTOWN
Mrs. Ethel Mattingly, 77, of Bardstown, widow of Joseph B. Mattingly, a Bardstown barber for many years, died at 12 noon, Tuesday, December 20, [1977] at Christopher South Nursing Home in Louisville. She had been in ill health for sometime. The former Ethel Downs, she was born and reared on a Nelson County farm, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Sim Downs. Mrs. Mattingly and her late husband reared three sons, Joseph B. Jr., who died a few years ago, and Eddie, who gave his life for his country in World War II, and Sim Mattingly, of Bardstown, who survives. Other survivors are five brothers, Russell Downs, of Radcliff; Tyler, Hal & Lingard Downs, all of Bardstown, and Nick Downs, of Tennessee; a sister, Mrs. Alice Elder, of Massachusetts; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. For many years, Mrs. Mattingly was employed as a hostess at the Old Kentucky Home State Park. Most of her life was spent here, though she and her deceased husband lived for a brief time in Louisville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, December 22, at St. Joseph Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The body is at Mann & Greenwell Funeral Home where a prayer service was held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

JOSEPH B. MATTINGLY, 73, LONG-TIME BARBER HERE DIES
A retired Bardstown barber, Joseph B. Mattingly, who had served two and three generations of local families in the more than 50 years he had worked at Bardstown before retiring four years ago due to ill health, died Saturday [May 14, 1966] at 5:35 a.m. in Louisville. Mr. Mattingly was 73. Mr. Mattingly who began barbering in 1911, for 33 years (1927-1960) with the late Henry Bennett, owned and operated the Bennett & Mattingly Shop at Bardstown. He continued working at the barber shop, which in 1960 became Hilton & Keeling, until retiring the first of April, 1962. From 1911 to 1919, Mr. Mattingly was a barber in Louisville, then for three years was at Bardstown, returned to Louisville for two years, and in 1924 again returned to Bardstown. He and Mr. Bennett bought the barber shop from the late Ed Nally in 1927, forming the partnership of Bennett & Mattingly. He took his training at the Louisville College of Barbering and part of the time he was in Louisville, he operated his own shop in the Highland Park area. Mr. Mattingly and his wife, the former Ethel Downs, would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in October, this year. He was a former member of the Bardstown Council Knights of Columbus, and of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph's Church. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Joseph B. Mattingly Jr. and Sim A. Mattingly, both of Bardstown; a brother, Tom Mattingly, Louisville, a sister, Mrs. T.O. Downs, Louisville; 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Cathedral. Rev. Joseph Batcheldor was celebrant of the Requiem Mass. Rev. Robert Edelen, Louisville, was in the sanctuary. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Howard Hilton, Billy Ray Keeling, Briscoe Beam, Harvey Stumph, Bill Jones and Bobby Jones. Honary pallbearers were S.R. Demaree, Dr. Harry Plock, Preston Jones, Dr. T.G. Forsee, Paul Keene and J.C. Newcomb. The body was at Mann, Greenwell & Arnold Funeral Home. Many friends and relatives from Bardstown and surrounding areas, Louisville, Owensboro, Paducah, KY, and Franklin, TN, and Grand Rapids, MI, called to pay their respects and to attend the services.
