Bertha was the daughter of Reuben Comley and Elizabeth Kanatzer. On 08 Oct 1903 she married John J. Hess and they had two children: John, Jr., and Lorena. Bertha died of arteriosclerotic heart disease at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 71.

John was the son of John and Augusta Hess. On 08 Oct 1903 he married Bertha Comley and they had two children, John, Jr., and Lorena. For most of his life John was employed in the leatherworking industry. Around the turn of the century he was a harness maker; at the time of his death he was a leather worker for a government depot. John died of a coronary occlusion.
