John was the son of John Hess and Bertha Comley. He married Kathryn McAuliffe and they had five children: Elizabeth "Betty", Judith "Judy", Lorena, John and Kay. He was a retired branch manager for Liberty National Bank and owner of the old Monarch grocery stores. John died at his home, 6440 Outer Loop, at the age of 79.
