Another Comrade Has Fallen - William H. Markland died at his home Monday, Sept. 11, 1899. He was born in Ripley County, Ohio, November 20th, 1834. Early in 1864 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served his country and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He was married to Elizabeth Marsh in 1858. To this union one child was born. In 1868 he was married again to Mary J. Dowty, who with five sons, survive him. Eugene, the oldest, has been a teacher in this county for several years. Comrade Markland was converted and united with the M. E. church under the labors of Rev. Epler, who also preached his funeral at Oak Grove Sept. 12th and laid his remains to rest in the Oak Grove cemetery. Shelbyville Democrat - 14 Sep 1899
