In the 1880 Taylor County Census for Oak Hill Precinct, Samuel Howell was family 58. He was 47 years old, A Farmer born in Kentucky. Both his parents are indicated to have been born in Virginia.
His wife, Mary E., was 34. The children were: Jeff, 17; Nancy A., 12; Sarah F., 9; Mary B., 7; Bettie J., 5; and Catherine, age 2 years. Next door lived Green Berry Underwood, age 33; and Joseph Davis, age 23.
Larue County Herald News, Thursday, August 12, 1897:
Samuel Howell of Enoch, is confined to his bed from sickness. He is 64 years old and has outlived 6 brothers and 5 sisters, being the only remaining one of his father's family.
Sam and Mary Howell are found living in the Oak Hill District of Taylor County when the 1900 census was taken. They have been married 38 years and Mary is listed as the mother of 8 children, 7 living.
There are five children living at home: Nannie A., Sallie F., Katie E., Lillie J., and Rebeca E.
In 1910 they are still living in the same district. Mary is now listed as the mother of 8 children, only 4 are still living. Their daughter "Kate" age 29 is living with them along with a granddaughter, Mary T. Bennett and a Grandson, Owen H. Bennett. These are children of Kate's sister Betty.

Last Wednesday the 26th day of May, 1915 the most destructive rain storm visited this section that ever was known in the history of this part of Taylor County.
Mr. King Skaggs has been confined to his bed ever since his awful experience in the flood. He remained in the water a good while and finally got out without any assistance.
Mr. Samuel Howell and daughter , Miss Katie Howell of White Rose, who have been ill for some time are no better.
Mrs. Lucy Shofner of Mac, who has been sick for several days we are glad to say is better.
In 1920 Samuel has apparently died and Mary is living as head of household #95. Living with her are two of her daughters.
Katherine, age 35, listed as single
Fannie, age 48, wife of Enoch S. Morris who is also living in the house.
Also in the house is a granddaughter, Mary T. Bennett, age 15, who is the daughter of Mary's daughter Betty J. Howell who married Thomas Bennett. and daughter, Fannie, 48, with her husband, Enoch Morris, age 39.
