The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William Harleston, Sr. are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial of the latter Monday, December 15, 2003 at eleven o clock in Nativity Catholic Church. The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Sunday between five and seven thirty o clock, with a Vigil Service held at five o clock.

Mrs. Harleston was born February 24, 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Paul Edward Rapier and Clare Moran Rapier.

She retired as a secretary with the Development Office at Porter Gaud School. She was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, South Carolina Historical Society, and volunteered as a docent at the Heyward-Washington House.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years; three daughters: Kathleen Harleston Greene of Gloucester, VA, Eleanor Cordes Harleston of Atlanta, GA, and Rita Harleston Curtis of Evans, GA.; two sons: William Harleston, Jr. of Augusta, GA and John Harleston of Mount Pleasant, SC; one brother: Pascal Moran Rapier of Corvallis, OR; 5 grandchildren: Martha Greene Bjers of Valdosta, GA, Creswell Garlington Curtis of Evans, GA, Edward Harleston Curtis of Evans, GA, Elizabeth Ann Harleston of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and John Harleston of Mt. Pleasant, SC and 2 great grandchildren.

He was born in 1916, the youngest son of Emily Frances Langley and John Harleston.

He was first honor graduate of the High School of Charleston in 1934 and graduated from the College of Charleston in 1938. After studying Architecture at the University of Virginia and serving in the Army in the European theater during World War II, Mr. Harleston worked for Halsey and Cummings Architects, which later became Cummings and McCrady Architects and Engineers. He became their Chief Architect before accepting a position in the 1960's as Charleston County's first building official. He later retired to his home on Charleston Harbor where he enjoyed his hobbies of gardening, sewing, book-binding, walking, and making colorful neck ties. In his earlier years he would have been seen sailing the waters of Charleston Harbor. Mr. Harleston was a lifetime member of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, a member of the South Carolina Society of The Cincinnati and a former member of the American Institute of Architect.

Mr. Harleston was married to the late Isabel Fitzgerald Rapier for 59 years and is survived by his five children: Kathleen Harleston Greene and husband Jimmy of Gloucester, VA, William Harleston, Jr. and wife Coral of Federal Way, WA, Eleanor Cordes Harleston of Atlanta, GA, Rita Harleston Curtis and husband Cres of Evans, GA, John Harleston and his wife Kathleen of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces: Betty Ann Harleston McInnis and husband James of Easley, SC, Mary Rebekah Harleston Heath of Louisville, KY, Joan Harleston Ansel of Charleston, SC; and his beloved cat, Penny.
