SHELBYVILLE - BENNETT, J.A., 67, died Thursday, October 21 2010 at Jewish Hospital, Shelbyville.

Born in Louisville to the late J. Edward and Tate Edelen Bennett, he was reared in Bloomfield. He attended Saint Michael's School at Fairfield, graduated from Saint Joseph's Preparatory School in Bardstown and attended Saint Catharine College in Springfield. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Shelbyville. His memberships included the Solomon Lodge No. 5 of Free and Accepted Masons and the Clear Creek Golf Course.

A lifelong horseman, Mr. Bennett was a former standardbred trainer and thoroughbred trainer, and was the leading driver at the California Exposition in 1975 and for several years at Louisville Downs. In recent years he was engaged in the ownership and operation of Bennett's Excavating.

Survivors include his wife, Generose M. Bennett; his brothers, Jimmy Bennett, and his wife, Missy of Burbank, CA, E. R. "Hoppy" Bennett of Shelbyville and R. H. Bennett and his wife, Leslie of Shelbyville; his sisters, Babs Bennett and her husband, Dr. L. B. Branch of Lexington, Mary L. Bennett of Shelbyville, Hallie Reiling and her husband, Keith of Olympia, WA, Susan Bennett of Lexington and Anne Tate Bennett and her husband, John Puljanowski of Shelbyville. A veritable host of special and loyal friends also survive.

In celebration of the life of J. A. Bennett his family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Birch House at Clear Creek Park in Shelbyville.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Kentucky Office of the American Diabetes Association or to the Church of the Annunciation. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall-Taylor Funeral Home.
