LaFayette Stiles Pence, in his Stiles history, wrote, “Joe Maxwell was going out with a cargo on a flatboat in the Rolling Fork River, when his boat came into contact with a tree that had fallen into the river near David Stiles’ house. He went to the house to get an ax with which to clear away the tree, and there sae Eunice at the spinning wheel. he was mush smitten with her, visited and married her after two years’ courtship.” Lewis Ogden Stiles, in his Stiles history, refers to Eunice as “the heroine of the Romance of the Borrowed Ax.”59
