Misc. Notes
Parents born in NY. Lived in Westfield, NJ in 1930. Parents bought “Atlantis Island” in Chippewa Bay, N.Y. in 1886, where families have spent the summers for years.

Nellie and Ralph summered on Atlantis Island, Chippewa Bay, NY, which had been in the Bailey family since 1867. After the death, in 1918, of Ralph's mother Emma Blackman Bailey, Atlantis Island was jointly owned by Ralph and his siblings Fred and May. In 1925, Ralph and Nellie bought Atlantis Island from the estate of Frederick R. Bailey and from Mary Bailey Maxfield. After World War II, Nellie and Ralph were joined at Atlantis during the summers by their children and grandchildren.

Ralph Waldo Bailey, 79 years old of 610 Tremont Avenue, father of Mayor Charles P. Bailey and retired president of Stillwell and Gladding, New York, analytical chemist, died Thursday night in Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield after a short illness.

A native of Elizabeth, Mr. Bailey came to Westfield in 1925. He was a graduate of Pingry School, Elizabeth and of Princeton University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1895. His association of more than 50 years wit the Stillwell and Gladding firm ended with retirement two years ago.

An expert in the analytical field of glycerin, oil, fat and waxes, Mr. Bailey devised a number of testing processes. He was a charter member and co-founder of the Association of Consulting Chemists and Chemical Engineers, a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association and the American Oil Chemists Society. He also was a member of the American Chemical Society. In 1945 he was awarded a plaque by the society in recognition of his 50 years service in the field of chemistry.

A member of the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Bailey had been active as a Sunday School Teacher many years in Second Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth before coming to Westfield.

Members of the Presbyterian Church remember Mr. Bailey as a faithful and hard worker who took pleasure in working above himself to beautify church grounds and his town. In 1932 he planted scores of evergreen trees in the Revolutionary Cemetery in Mountain avenue to enhance the appearance of the old graveyard.

Mr. Bailey was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. George W. Bailey of Elizabeth, and a brother of the late Dr. Frederick R. Bailey, also of Elizabeth.

Surviving, besides the mayor, are his wife, Mrs. Nellie King West Bailey; a daughter, Mrs. Doris Bryant, of Westfield and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Gray's Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Skinner of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Elizabeth
