After their marriage, William and Martha lived for several years in Elizabeth. They were members of Third Presbyterian Church until Dec 9, 1884. For a number of years he was superintendent of their Sunday School.
William and Martha West were one of the first settlers of Roselle, NJ. Around 1875, the family moved to 154 First Avenue East, Roselle, where they remained for 50 years. They belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Roselle where William taught a Sunday School class; they maintained their membership in this church for the rest of their lives. He was a Republican and very prominent in the civic life of Roselle and Union County. He was the second Mayor of Roselle and served in that capacity for two terms, 1897-8 and 1899-1900. A framed photo of him hangs in the Council Chambers at Roselle Borough Hall.
Lived in Linden, Union, NJ in 1880 and 1900; Roselle, NJ in 1910; Orange, NJ in 1920.
When Nellie and her family moved to 610 Tremont Avenue, Westfield, NJ, in 1925, William moved with them and he died there on May 10, 1926. William and Martha, along with their daughter Ada and their son William Jr. and his two wives, were buried in the West family plot, Lawn Plot 2, Lot 163, Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, NJ.
