Description: Three Years After Murdering His Brother.
Date: August 31 1876

Newspaper published in: St. Louis, Mo.
(From the Louisville Courier Journal, 20th)

John C. HOLTSHOUSER was lodged in jail, yesterday morning, by Detective BLIGH and Deputy Sheriff HUNTER, of Nelson county, on the charge of murdering his brother, Daniel Webster HOLTSHOUSER, on the evening of the 23d of March, 1873. About two miles north-east of Bardstown there lived at the time Mr. George W. HOLTSHOUSER, father of the prisoner and victim, a farmer, nearly eighty years of age. His two sons, John and Webster, superintended their father's business and assisted in the support of their parents. John was addicted, however, to strong drink, and was jealous of the little superiority exercised by his brother in managing the farm, and this jealousy, sided by his intemperance, bred a feud between them of several months duration ere it ended in Webster's death.

The murder was committed on Saturday evening. John C. HOLTSHOUSER had been in Bardstown during the day, and returned home at about 7:00 o'clock that evening, and entered the room where his father and brother were sitting by the fire. His brother sat by a small table reading the New York Ledger. Without a word John C. drew a large revolver and shot his brother in the breast, and then fired again, and a third time, sending a ball into the crown of the head through the brain. Then the murderer fled to the residence of Mr. BOONE, his father in law, who lived near by, and giving his wife a parting kiss, escaped across the country, and was therefore a fugitive until the Sheriff caught him yesterday.

He was a Civil War veteran, Company B. Ninth Infantry.

In later years he became a fugitive and wandered from family to family for shelter.
