Mattie is listed in the 1897 Taylor County School census attending Poplar Grove School with her sisters Minnie, age 14, and Ida, age 10. They are living in the Clipper Post Office area of Taylor County and their parent/guardian is listed as James Johnson.
OBITUARY: Mrs. Mattie Johnson Howell, 91, died Friday at Sunrise Manor after a long illness. She was born in Taylor County, July 25, 1884. The daughter of James R. Johnson and Mary Alice Elmore, she married James R. Howell in 1910. He predeceased her. Two sons were born of the marriage, Carl Howell, Sr., who survives, and James Richard Howell, Jr., who died in 1944 while in the Army. Two grandchildren, Carl Howell, Jr. and Pamela Sue Howell, and two great grandchildren are living here.
She joined the Methodist Church at an early age -- was a devoted wife and mother and her life and ideals survive in her children and grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Brownfield Funeral Home, Hodgenville, followed by burial in Red Hill Cemetery.

Jimmie was a farmer in his early years. He operated the Howell Mill at Malt, Otter Creek, in Larue County after his father died. The mill had a 100 barrel per day capacity and had an output of high grade flour with large scale sales throughout the surrounding community.
He was elected a State Representative to the State Legislature in 1911. He was the chief field deputy for the Western District of Kentucky under the United States Marshal under J. Edgar Hoover from 1914 to 1919; he made more than 1,200 arrests. He was sheriff of Larue County from 1921 to 1925 and the mayor of Hodgenville, during his later years.
He was a Democrat and a member of the Masonic Order and the Knights Templar Commandery at Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky.

James (Jim) Richard Howell, age 78 years, prominent Hodgenville resident died suddenly Sunday morning at his home on Greensburg Street.
His family was among the first residents of Kentucky, having settled here in 1780. He was State Representative from this district from 1912 to 1914. During World War I he served as a Deputy U. S. Marshall and later became Sheriff of Larue Conty. He was a former City Councilman and Mayor of Hodgenville and served as a member of the Hodgenville Independent School Board for twelve years. For 29 years, Mr. Howell owned and operated Hodgenville Roller Mills but disposed of that interest about 12 years ago. he built, owned and had operated the Nancy Lincoln Inn adjoining Lincoln National Historic Park, near town for the past 30 years.
He was director of the Larue Federal Savings and Loan Association in this city and was one of the association's appraisers. he was a 50 year Mason and a member of the First Baptist Church here.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Johnson Howell; one son, Carl Howell, local attorney; two grandchildren, Pam and Carl Howell, Jr., of this city, and four sisters, Mrs. Stella Ennis, Mrs. Hattie Howard and Mrs. Nora Rayle, all of this county, and Mrs. Maggie Lewis, of Kansas City, Kansas.
One son, James Richard Howell, Jr., died in 1944 while serving in the U. S. Army.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hodgenville First Baptist Church with interment in Red Hill Cemetery.
James R. Howell (born 1879), who was from Larue County, and served as a Democrat Representative from the 32nd district in 1912. James R. Howell was the son of J. Mason Howell (born 1849), who served as a Democrat Representative from the 32nd district in 1916.
