Stephen never married, had no children. He was in the 36th Field Artillery, he went into the Army as a private at age 31. On January 18, 1943, he was wounded by a mine on Anzio beachhead in Italy and lost both legs. Stephen was a well-known horseman and trainer. He died at the Louisville VA hospital of a kidney ailment. Owner of Noble Kalarama, 1940 World Champion Fine Harness Horse, 5 years in a row. Winning in both Chicago and at Madison Square Garden in NY.

Lived in Hodgenville in 1940. Also living there was his cousin Paul L. Dawson, age 20, of Louisville, who helped with the horses.
