McAULIFFE, SALLY EDELEN, 91, of Louisville and Alexandria, VA, passed away on January 5, 2011.

Sally was married to George F. McAuliffe, M. D. who predeceased her in 1975.

She is survived by her five children, Mary Elizabeth McAuliffe and Karen Maureen McAuliffe, of Alexandria, George Francis McAuliffe Jr. and Robert Lane McAuliffe of Louisville and James Kevin McAuliffe of Lake Oswego, OR. In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Virginia Bennett of Hilton Head, SC and Dorothy Herrman of Louisville; and her brother, Robert Henry Edelen of New Albany, IN. She has four grandchildren, Brendan Lane McAuliffe and Melissa Ann McAuliffe of Louisville and Dominic Lane McAuliffe and Sarah Peyton McAuliffe of Lake Oswego.

Sally was a member of Holy Spirit Church and a former member of Big Springs Country Club.

Sally was born on October 8, 1919 to Robert Henry and Mary Leona Edelen in Bardstown, KY. She was the third of nine children. She attended Bethlehem Academy in Bardstown and Webster College in St. Louis, MO. In 1943 she graduated from the Nazareth School of Nursing in Louisville as a registered nurse.

In 1944 she married George F. McAuliffe, M.D., a dermatologist and captain in the U.S. Navy.

Sally's favorite hobbies were playing bingo, bridge, cards of any type and bowling. When her children were young, she could be found car pooling them to various sports activities, school, dance and modeling classes.

The McAuliffe family extends their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the many friends who have been so giving of their love and support.

A Mass to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY 40206.

In her memory, contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Metropolitan Washington (www.hospiceonline.org).
