This information from Gertie Reed, Great-Granddaughter of John and Malinda -- She said John and Malinda rode horseback to Kentucky from either Alabama or Virginia, with two small children.
Other records and DeSpain researchers indicate John was born in Green County, Kentucky.
John DeSpain was a son of James Scott DeSpain and Susan/Sally Peterson DeSpain. James Scott was born about 1765 in Virginia and died before 20 Jan 1835. Some say it is likely James DeSpain is buried in the Sandlick Burying Ground.

Malinda was said to be French and Low Dutch.
In the 1870 Green County Census, Malinda is head of household, 91, living in the Brush Creek area of the county. She keeps house, was born in Alabama, is age 67. Her children at home with her are: Hutaba, 34 (house carpenter); Lewis, 26 (farmer).
