George Garretson Barry, 94, New Haven, died Sept. 11, 1998 at his residence.
A native of New Haven, he was a retired employe of the old L&N Railroad Co. where he worked for 47 years before retiring in 1968. He was also an emplyee of the old New Haven Drug Store and served as mayor of New Havenfrom 1966 to 1988.
He was a member of the L&N Band, the Barry Orchestra, Lincoln Trail Development Advisory Board, New Haven All American City Committee. a charter member of the New Haven Optimist Club and the KY Railroad Museum.
He was a recipient the Bardstown Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame, the Nelson County Outstanding Citizen award and a KY Colonel.
He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church and Alter society and a member of the Church choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Garrety and Georgia Arn Ferriel Barry: his wife, Viola Howard Barry; three brothers. John Bernard, Paul and Gerald Barry; and two sisters. Mary Orestes and Catherine Rose Barry.
Survivors include; a daughter. Wanda McClain of Nellsyford, Va.; a sister. Mary Neva Hurst of Bardstown: five grandchildren, Nina McClain, Dr. Cate McClain, William McClain III, Ayn Strecker and Garretson Graybeal; and nine great-grandchild'
Funeral services were at 11 a.m.. Sept. 11 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, New Haven. with burial in the church cemetery. Father Clarence Howard and Father Wayne Jenkins officiated.
Active pallbearers were Charlie and Buddy Hurst, Joe Bob, Paul Abell, Richard Barry and Timmy Bartley.
Honorary pallbearers were Charles “Meat” Mattingly, J.C. Young, Jimmy Mahoney, Winfield Gabhard, Paul Hagan, Bill McClain III, Nick Sims and Marvin Hall.
Prayers, led by the St. Catherine Alter Society, were at 4 p.m. , Sept. 13. at Joseph L Greenwell Funeral Home, New Haven. which was in charge of the arrangements.
