COURIER-JOURNAL OBTIUARY - 11/23/2011 - BARDSTOWN - Downs, Joseph Patrick "Joe Pat," 79, died Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Colonial Health and Rehab. He was born March 10, 1932 in Nelson County and was a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph Preparatory School. He was a Korean War veteran who served as a member of the 113th ordnance. He graduated from The Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa in 1949 and also attended the University of Louisville. Mr. Downs was an auctioneer, realtor, developer, entrepreneur and dairy farmer. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Hilary Downs; his parents, Joseph Francis and Mary Ada Hall Downs; two brothers, Joseph Ray Downs and Julian Downs; and two sisters, Mary Thelma Kelly and Mary Jane West. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Bennett Downs; three sons, Michael Downs, David Downs (Karen) and Joseph Downs (Paula), all of Bardstown; three daughters, Harriett Ballard, Angela Ballard (Michael) and Teresa Newton, all of Bardstown; a nephew, Bill McCloskey (Linda) of Bardstown; 21 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Downs of Springfield; three brothers, Joseph Earl Downs and Joseph Dennis Downs, both of Bardstown, Joseph Alfred Downs of Chattanooga, TN; a sister, Frances Burch of Louisville; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, with burial in Bardstown Cemetery. The Marion County Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors at the graveside. Visitation will be Friday, November 25, 2011 from 2-8 p.m. and after 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home. A prayer service will be Friday at 6 p.m. with Deacon John Hamilton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church, St. Joseph Elementary School or Bethlehem High School. Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Bennett Downs, 87, of Bardstown, passed away Saturday January 26, 2019 at Loretto Mother House. She was born September 7, 1931 in Louisville, raised in Taylorsville, graduated from Nazareth College in Louisville, retired nurse from Family Medical Center, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Pat Downs; son, Stephen Hilary Downs; five brothers, Edward, Warren, Jack, Billy, and Pat Bennett; and three sisters, Anna Ray Hurst, Kass Winkler, and Joanne McCloskey. She is survived by her seven children, J. Michael Downs, David (Karen) Downs, Harriett Ballard, Angela (Michael) Ballard, Joseph F. Downs II, Teresa Downs Newton, and Bill (Linda) McCloskey; daughter-in-law, Elaine Downs; eighteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; brother, Bobby Bennett; three sisters, Jeanne Theobald, Carol Bennett, and Bettye Tharp; and several nieces and nephews. Her Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am Thursday January 31, 2019 at Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, with burial in Bardstown Cemetery. Rev. Terry Bradshaw will officiate. Visitation will be 4 – 8 pm Wednesday January 30 and 9 – 10:15 am Thursday January 31 at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service will be Wednesday evening. Memorial contributions may go to Loretto Mother House or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
