Misc. Notes
Raymond Knopp was born August 28, 1917, in Somerset, Kentucky. After completing grade school at St. Peter, Louisville, he entered Mt. St. Francis Seminary. He began his novitiate year at Angola, Indiana, where he received the name of Friar Leo. He made First Profession on October 1, 1938, and then he had completed his priestly studies at our seminary in Carey, he was ordained June 3, 1944, at Toledo, Ohio. Father Leo spent all his years in the priesthood serving in parishes of the Province, first as an Assistant Pastor at San Rocco, Chicago Heights. In 1957, he returned to San Rocco, this time as Pastor and Guardian. In 1960, he was assigned to St. Joseph in LaGrange. Three years later, he went to St. John the Baptist in Calumet. His final assignment was that of Associate Pastor at St. Joseph, Terre Haute. Father Leo suffered from poor health for a number of years but, despite his illness, he tried to work. The friars who lived with him in his last years came to admire him for his patience in suffering and for his compassion towards the sick and shut-ins whom he visited, especially, on holidays which he said were particularly lonely days for them. He always kept a suitcase packed for emergency trips to the hospital and he spoke calmly to his confreres of his approaching end. On April 6, 1972, having been admitted the previous day to St. Anthony Hospital, Terre Haute, he died in his sleep.
