CECELIA A. SPALDING GREENWELL, 76, formerly of Louisville, died Thursday at Sunrise Manor Nursing Center in Hodgenville. She was a native of Howardstown and a retired employee of the old James B. Beam Distilling Co. Survivors: her husband, Joseph L. Greenwell; daughters, Diane Smith, Janice M. Chesser and Patricia E. Roehm; two sons, Joseph L. Greenwell Jr. and the Rev. Michael A. Greenwell; a sister, Theresa Spalding; a brother, George M. Spalding; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Catherine Catholic Church, New Haven. Burial: church cemetery. Visitation: Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home, New Haven, 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday. Memorial gifts: church's cemetery fund.

Joseph Leon 'Uncle Sil' Greenwell Sr., 92; of New Haven, Ky.A funeral Mass for Joseph Leon "Uncle Sil" Greenwell Sr., 92, of New Haven, Ky., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven, with burial in St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church Cemetery. His son Rev. Michael A. Greenwell, O. Carm will be the celebrant. He died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Windsor Gardens in Bardstown. He was born Aug. 5, 1917, in New Haven, Ky. to the late Martin William and Mary Beulah Metcalf Greenwell. He was a retired employee of Schenley Distillery Bernheim Plant in Louisville with 39 years of service as a warehouseman, a member of the Distillery, Rectifying, Wine and Allied Workers International Union of America, former member of St. Rita Church in Louisville, Rolling Fork-New Haven Fire Departments, the old New Haven Optimist Club and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven. Survivors include three daughters, Diane Smith and husband, Larry, of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Patricia Roehm and husband, Ronnie, of Sellersburg and Janice Gettelfinger Chesser, of Louisville; two sons, Joseph L. "Sonny" Greenwell Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of New Haven and Rev. Michael Andrew Greenwell, O. Carm., of San Francisco; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cecelia A. Spalding Greenwell; two sisters, Dora G. McHugh and Mary Alice Gargotto; a grandson, Richard Leon Greenwell; and a great grandson, Jeremy Stuart Greenwell. Visitation at Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home, 324 E. Center St., Hwy. 52, New Haven,. Ky., will be after 2 p.m. Friday. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family request that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Catherine Church Cemetery or St. Catherine School, 413 First Street, New Haven, Ky. 40051.

He was born Aug 5, 1917 in New Haven, KY to the late Martin William and Mary Beulah Metcalf Greenwell, beside his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Cecelia A. Spalding Greenwell; two sisters, Dora G. McHugh and Mary Alice Gargotto; a grandson, Richard Leon Greenwell; and a great-grandson, Jeremy Stuart Greenwell.
