He was born John Matthew Wimsatt, when then Civil War came half the family back the north and the other the south and they added the “e” to the last name to show they were supporting the South. So then it became John Matthew Wimsett. Around 1900 the ones that changed it to Wimsett had a falling out over a grocery bill. Some of the Wimsett's ran up a high bill at the grocery and then denied they had. This caused another name change for some to Wimpsett. This is what has been told to me from a relative.
