SCHAEFER, GEORGE R., 79, of Louisville, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Summerfield Manor.
He was a Navy veteran and a member of the VFW of New Albany. He retired after 46 years of service with Norfolk Southern Railroad (formerly K&I railroad). He was an avid volunteer at Caritas Saintly Treasures at Caritas Hospital and Meals on Wheels and a member of St. Denis Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Jean Schaefer; parents, Mildred and John Schaefer; brother, John Schaefer; and grandson, Jason Schaefer.
Mr. Schaefer is survived by his 3 children, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and a sister.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Denis Catholic Church, 4205 Cane Run Road, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Sunday at J.B. Ratterman & Sons-Southwest, 4832 Cane Run Road.
The family would like to thank the staff at Summerfield Manor, his doctor, and the Hosparus staff.
