FUNERAL TO BE THIS MORNING FOR THOMAS CHESTER MILES
Thomas Chester Miles, 43, who owned and operated a farm at St. Francis, died at his home there Monday night at 11 o'clock following a brief illness of pneumonia. He was stricken ill on Saturday. Born at St. Francis on November 24, 1909, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Miles, he had been a resident of that community all his life. A number of years ago, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mattie Mattingly, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Norris and Mrs. Waniece Peake, and several step-children. His parents survive with five brothers and three sisters. They are Aaron, F. E. and Paul Miles of St. Francis; J. B. Miles of Louisville, Werner Miles of Bardstown, Mrs. Leo Cissell of Loretto, and Mrs. Paul Gardner and Mrs. Elizabeth Miles of St. Francis. Funeral services, with Solemn Requiem Mass, will be conducted this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Francis of Assisi Church by the Rev. John Talbott Spalding, assisted by two other priests. Four brothers and two step-sons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Mary Martha (Mattie) Mattingly Miles, 73, of St. Francis, died at 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday at Mary Immaculate Hospital, where she was admitted about four hours earlier. She had suffered from a heart ailment for the past six years. She was a daughter of Benedict and Susan N. Wimsatt and was a native of St. Mary. She was twice married and twice widowed. Her first husband, John Mattingly, died in February, 1928; her second, Chester Miles, died in January, 1953. Six daughters and three sons survive. They are Miss Margaret Lucille Mattingly, Mrs. Aaron Miles, Miss Margaret Mattingly and Mrs. John M. Roberts, all of St. Francis, and Mrs. A. T. Rucker and Mrs. Otho Peake, both of Loretto; Spencer Mattingly, John Mattingly, Jr., and Marion Robert Mattingly, all of St. Francis. There also are 37 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body was at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Church at St. Francis by the Rev. John Talbott Spalding. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were A. T. Rucker, Jr., Billy, Tom and Leon Mattingly, and Jimmie and Bobby Miles.
