Joshua was the son of Edmund Lancaster & Jane Buckman. He married Sarah Catherine Medley & they had 5 children. He married Sarah's sister Georgia Ann Medley on 30 October 1867 & they had 9 children. He married Amelia Nolan & they had 3 children. He married Anne Elizabeth Huffman Phillips & they had 6 or 7 children. Joshua owned a farm near Flaherty KY. His large 2 story white house with a fireplace in each room & a private stairway to each room upstairs was built shortly before the Civil War. There was a screened-in porch between the main house & the kitchen with a playroom above the kitchen. All his children wrote their names on the walls of the playroom & he never painted over their names. He was 25 years old at the start of the Civil War. Soldiers stopped there asking for money; however, they just ate their food & left. He spent a lot of time in his parlor reading law & medical books & helped people in surrounding areas in both regards. He was active in church & civic affairs. Besides his children, he also raised several of his grandchildren.
