SOLDIER LOST IN BATTLE OF THE BULGE NOT FORGOTTEN BY FAMILY
Ron Benningfield, Correspondent
Sixty years ago this month, America fought the deadliest single battle in U.S. History.
For six weeks, from Dec. 16, 1944, to Jan. 25, 1945, over one million men -more than 500,000
Americans, 600,000 Germans, and 55,000 British troops - engaged in what was to become known
as the Battle of the Bulge. Three German armies made a last-ditch effort to reach the sea, trap four allied armies and force a negotiated peace. They surprised the Americans and, through horrific artillery and small arms fire, pushed back the center of the American line, forming the namesake "bulge The Americans reformed and successfully counterattacked, effectively ending any further major German Offensive. But the costs were great. Casualties mounted to shockingly high totals -19,000 American soldiers killed; another 61,000 wounded; 1,400 British killed or wounded; an estimated 100,000 German soldiers killed, wounded, or captured. Numbers so large are almost incomprehensible. They only begin to be understood when their impact is brought home to the local level, where lives of surviving family members - husbands, fathers, sisters, and brothers -were forever changed because of what happened that cold, snowy winter in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg.
From the moment those soldiers died, those at home were left with only the memories of them, moments frozen in time of birthdays, holidays, work and play, those bits and pieces that they have replayed over and over to keep traces of their lost loved ones fresh in their minds.
Many LaRue County families were affected by the battle. One was Will and Bessie Morrison's family of Hodgenville. The two had five children - Boone, Louise, Dalton, Hilda, and Bobby.
All except Dalton are still alive.
