Misc. Notes
Thomas Wise was born about 1345 at Sydenham House, Marystowe Parish, Devonshire, England. His parents were
John Wise and his wife
Joane (Millaton) Wise.
Around 1410, perhaps already a childless widower [unproven], Thomas Wise (aka Wyse) married wealthy heiress
Margaret Britt, born around 1390 at Staddiscombe (mistakenly called "Slottiscombe" in many genealogies), near the town of Plymouth, Co. Devon, England. Her father was
Robert Britt aka Brytte. He had died around 1404 (often mistakenly used as Margaret's birth year; this is impossible as Margaret had a younger sister, Elizabeth Britt, b: ca. 1400, who married Sir John Fortescue, a local knight).
So far as is known, the couple, who lived at Sydenham, had only one son, their heir,
John Wise, Esquire, born about 1429 at Sydenham House, Marystowe Parish, Devonshire, England. His mother did not long survive his birth but she left him significant land-holdings in and around Plymouth, from her own inheritance. When he was of age, John Wise, Esq., built a large stately mansion on a hill overlooking the port of Plymouth in Stoke Damerel Parish and named it "Mount Wise". The parish was later renamed "Sydenham Damerel" in honor of the family's earlier estate: Sydenham House in Marystowe Parish, Devonshire, England.
Thomas Wise passed away a few years after 1429 when his son, John Wise, Esq., was born. His exact date of death is not known; it could not be the 1421 sometimes cited as his son was born ca. 1429.
