When Florence Fordham was born in 1610, her father, Robert, was 20, and her mother, Elizabeth, was 29. She married John Carman and they had six children together. She then married John Hicks on June 1, 1655, in New York. She died on February 7, 1660, in Queens, New York, at the age of 50.

Arrived on the New England coast within eleven years after the landing of the Mayflower [about 1631], and later located on Long Island. A ship master by trade, John immigrated on the ship "Lyon" (or "The Plough") in 1631, settling first in Boston and Roxbury, MA.

FOUNDER OF HEMPSTEAD, LONG ISLAND
Settled first in Boston and Roxbury, MA. In 1643, he and Rev. Robert Fordham were sent from Stamford, CT to negotiate a land deal with the Indians. They were successful and proceeded to found the town of Hempstead, Long Island with Robert Coe and others. His wife Florence was probably the sister or cousin of Rev. Robert Fordham.

He died in Hempstead by 29 may 1654. (At New Haven court on that date William Leveridge of Oyster Bay "declared that he had bought a certin debt of Mrs. Carman of Hempstead, due from Capt. Silvester," implying that the husband of Mrs. Carman was deceased by that time.

His widow married as his second wife John Hicks of Hempstead. 7 Apr 1661: petition of "John Carman, Caleb Carman and Benjamin Coe, husband of Abigail Carman, praying that John Hicks, who married their mother, may be obliged to render an account of the estate."
