MRS. BRITTEN FOLLOWS HER BABY SON IN DEATH - SOLEMN REQUIEM HIGH MASS SATURDAY MORNING AT ST. PATRICK'S FOR MOTHER, 41 - Just 25 hours after the death of her three-pound son who had been delivered by Caesarean section, Mrs. Martha Mary Greenwell Britten died yesterday at Hayswood Hospital. She was 41 years old. Solemn Requiem High Mass will be intoned Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Patrick's church and the mother and her son, Frank Allen, will be buried in adjoining graves in the Catholic cemetery at Washington. News of Mrs. Britten's death was received with a sense of profound shock by all who knew her and her many friends will remember her not only for her personal charm but also for her devotion to her family. Mrs. Britten underwent the Caesarean section Monday at the hospital where, at various times she had been a medical technician since she came to Maysville in 1938. The baby was delivered at 2:10 p.m. Monday and died at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday. One of the eight children of Dr. J. I. Greenwell and the late Mrs. Marie Rapier Greenwell, Mrs. Britten was born on April 29, 1914 at New Haven, Ky., where her father still lives, though he is seriously ill. Following her graduation from St. Catherine's High School in New Haven, she studied medical technology at Louisville and after employment in the offices of various physicians, including that of her father, she came to Maysville to take employment in the office of Dr. W. H. Cartmell. For a period of 10 years after her arrival here she worked at various times for both Dr. Cartmell and the hospital. On June 22, 1946 she was married to John Britten, an employee of the grinding room at the Browning Manufacturing Company and son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Britten, of West Fourth Street. Besides her husband and her father, she leaves two pre-school children, Joan Marie, five, and Jerry, two. Two other children died less than 24 hours after birth, Mary Martha and John E. Jr. Other survivors include five brothers and two sisters, J. I. Greenwell, Jr., of this city, a principal in Moore's Auto Supplies store here, Richard S. and James R. Greenwell, both of Bardstown, Nicholas Greenwell, of New Haven, Harold Greenwell, of Louisville, Mrs. J. W. Bowling, Jeffersonville, Ind., and Sister Marie George, a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor at Cincinnati. The remains will be taken from the J. W. Porter and Sons Funeral Home to her late residence at 315 Sutton Street where friends may call after 4 p.m. today.
