William Thomas McClain, 88, of Glenview, Ill., died Nov. 27, 2014, peacefully at his home.

Bill, or Mac, as he was more commonly referred to, was born in Louisville, and raised in Bardstown, a place that remained dear to him throughout his life. As an Ensign in the U.S, Navy, he served his country from 1945 to 1948 and received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1948, graduating with honors as a member of the Tau Beta Pi Society. In 1958, he achieved a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans. He had a productive and long career as a patent attorney, initially with Standard Oil of Indiana (Amoco then British Petroleum) in Chicago, then after retirement, of counsel with the law firm Finnegan in Washington, D.C. He loved the intellectual stimulation of his work and the opportunity to interact with people throughout the world. He liked to talk and never met someone who he could not engage in conversation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, G. Lee and Catherine S. McClain.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wanda B. McClain; his children, Nina McClain (Jean Luis Caldwell), of Annapolis, Md., Cate McClain (Jack Schooley), of Albuquerque, Ann McClain, of Paris, France, Bill McClain (Connie), of Wilmette, Ill., and Gary McClain, of Abingdon, Va.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown. The inurnment will occur immediately following the Mass at the Bardstown Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join the immediate family at a luncheon celebration of Mac's life in the chapel at St. Joseph College's Spalding Hall, 114 N. Fifth St., Bardstown, following the inurnment.

The family would like to thank Northshore Hospice and his caretakers for their kindness and caring in his last few months of life.
