Sally West Johnson was a reporter and editor at the Rutland Herald for 20 years before becoming the editor of Vermont Magazine. She left the magazine in 2003 to become a freelance writer. She lived in Middlebury.

MIDDLEBURY - Sally West Johnson, 60, died Sept. 8, 2010, with liver disease.

She was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., Aug. 21, 1950, the daughter of Leight and Shirley Johnson, and grew up in Parkville, Md.

She graduated in 1972 from Middlebury College with a degree in American Literature.

After college, she taught school for a year in Calcutta, India, before working in New York City for the Associated Press on the radio desk and for Newsweek as part-time copy editor. In Vermont, she was employed as a freelance writer for the Burlington Free Press, while taking science courses at the University of Vermont, as editor for the Rutland Herald for 20 years and for Vermont Magazine in Middlebury.

She was also a freelance writer for more than a decade for the New York Times, the Boston Globe and, more recently, Seven Days and Vt.Digger.org, as well as a frequent contributor to the Middlebury College Alumni Magazine. In 1999, she authored a story for the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine about her liver disease. In 2002 and 2004, she was co-author of the travel book, "Explorer's Guide for Vermont."

She was a board member of the John Graham Shelter for the Homeless, Middlebury Community Television and Addison County Parent-Child Center.

She also enjoyed gardening, worldwide travel and was a horsewoman, serving as president of Sugarbush Polo Club.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Terry of Middlebury, and their son, Will, of Middlebury and Washington, D.C.; and three siblings, Peter Johnson of Baltimore, Md., Chris Johnson of Shelburne and Timothy Johnson of Frederick, Md.

She was predeceased by a brother, Leight Johnson Jr., in 1979.

The memorial service will be held at a later date.
