A longtime resident of Baton Rouge and a resident of Lafayette for 15 years, he died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 1996, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. He was 74 and a native of Bardstown, Ky. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II in the European Theatre of Operations in the 92nd Bomber Group as a pilot of a B-17 bomber and served in the Korean conflict. Visiting at Martin and Castille Funeral Home Inc., Lafayette, 8 a.m. until religious services in the chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. Jack O'Dell, pastor, First United Methodist Church. Music provided by Joni Hamilton, organist and soloist. Interment in Bardstown Cemetery, Bardstown. Survived by wife, June Cotter Stiles, Lafayette; two daughters,Sherry Stiles Ballard and Blaine Cotter Stiles, both of Baton Rouge; a son, Robert H. Stiles II, Denham Springs; three grandchildren, Brandy and Burgundy Ballard and Blaine Stiles Wilson, all of Baton Rouge; and a sister, Beverly Stiles Russell, Clearwater, Fla. Preceded in death by parents, Robert Hugh Stiles and the former Mary Linder, both natives of Kentucky. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Hugh Stiles II, Bruce Wayne Ballard, Blaine Stiles Wilson, Gordon Knuckles, Bill Ruffin, Tom Fournet, Leo Ballard and Jerry Smith. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

June graduated from Lafayette High School in 1942. Two years later, she met and married Hugh D. Stiles II, who was a U.S. Army Air Forces officer and pilot from Bardstown, Kentucky. This union lasted 50 years, until his death 10 years ago, and produced three children.

June was involved in the telegraph services during World War II. She was a broker with Stiles Realty of Baton Rouge for many years and moved back to Lafayette in 1980 to care for her ailing father. She was a member of the Old Girl Network, a group of lifelong friends. She loved babies and playing bridge at the Rose House Bridge Club.
