Misc. Notes
Weller, George, J.P. Barnes and uncle Sam Beam lived with C.R. Barnes family in 1940.
6"Columbus R. Barnes, Agricultural Implements and Grain Dealer of Bardstown, Ky., was born at the old Pennebaker Homestead, on Cedar Creek, in Nelson County, November 13, 1858. He is the son of Robert W. and Louisa Pennebaker Barnes. His maternal grandfather, Peter Pennebaker, was one of the best known and most popular men of his day in Nelson County. He was an early settler of Nelson County, and raised a large family. Among his sons was Col. Chas. D. Pennebaker, of Washington City. Columbus R. Barnes was educated in the county schools and at the Bardstown M. and F. Institute. He entered the grocery business in March 1882, alone, and in 1883 admitted his father as a partner. The firm then became known as R. W. Barnes & Son. In 1884 he sold out his interest in the grocery business and became the agent for the Singer Manufacturing Co., and was their agent in Nelson, Spencer, Larue and Bullitt Counties for over four years. He then entered the firm of Sloan & McGinnis, grocers for one year when he became a member of the well-known firm of McGinnis, Barnes & Weller, dealers in farming implements, groceries, etc. In 1890 he purchased the interest of Mr. Weller and in 1892 was appointed U. S. Internal Revenue Stamp Deputy under the Harrison adminstration for the Bardstown Division, serving until July, 1893." Mr. Barnes built the present handsome establishment in August, 1895. It is 250 feet long by 55 feet front. He keeps constantly on hand a large supply of every kind of grain. One department is arranged for wagons, implements and hay; another department is for coal, shingles, etc. The first and second floors are both for grain. Next to the office is a finely arranged place for saddles, harness, etc. He has two large teams to convey his sales to train, city or country. Mr. Barnes is a most energetic and representative business man. He deserves success because he is honest and would not sell a man one single article but what was up to the standard for any consideration. He is polite and attentive, extremely popular, and bids fair to become one of the most successful business men in Nelson County. On June 25, 1884, he was married to Miss Katie Beam, daughter of Wm. Beam, a prominent farmer of this county. Mrs. Barnes is a beautiful woman and is very popular in social and church circles. In 1887 their baby, Ada, received first premium as the most beautiful baby at the Bardstown Fair, out of an entrance of eighteen lovely babies." (The Nelson County Record, Illustrated Historical and Industrial Supplement, dated 1896.)
Columbus R. Barnes was married to Lydia Catherine Beam on June 24, 1884.
