Misc. Notes
Benjamin Pile, Sr. was born in Virginia to Richard and Elizabeth (Sprigg) Pile. His parents were natives of Prince George's County, Maryland. Benjamin, Sr. was the grandson of William (1701-1732) and Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Pile.

The subject was a soldier in the Virginia Continental Line during the American Revolution. He was discharged at Yorktown in 1785.

He married Ruth Ann Roberts, 1767-1827, on October 4, 1790 in Berkley County, Virginia. Ruth was the daughter of Samuel and Ruth (Van Meter) Roberts. For a list of his and Ruth's ten children, see her entry.

He and Ruth, and baby son, William, 1791-1850, went to Washington County, Kentucky in late 1792. His brother William Pile had located there in 1783. Benjamin Pile was a Captain in the 50th Regiment of the Cornstalk Militia from April to July 1804. Ben settled on Road Run about three miles north of Springfield, KY on the east side of what is now the Bloomfield Road, KY Highway 55, near Valley Hill, KY. Mr. Pile was a surveyor, a blacksmith, a farmer, and a tavern keeper.

Steve Thrasher, of Louisville, KY, now deceased, submitted an article on him in the 1991 WASHINGTON COUNTY BICENTENNIAL HISTORY 1792-1992. He and his family are chronicled in THE PYLE - PILE FAMILY IN AMERICA, 1642-1980, copyright 1981 by Howard T. and Jane (Weaver) Pile of Kokomo, IN.

Benjamin Pile, Sr. died May 5, 1824 and his remains rest beside those of his wife. This cemetery was surrounded by a stacked dry stone enclosure about 10' x 10'. When I first recorded this cemetery Sunday October 5, 1975 with Miss Olive Walker, a Washington County, KY historian, and Miss Adeline Osbourne the stones were very legible, however the walls were beginning to fall into the cemetery area. I do not know if other Piles or others might also be buried in this cemetery.
