After George Washington Holtshouser's death in 1877 the estate was auctioned off. At the auction George's son, Robert Peal Holtshauser, and his friend, John Hardin, argued over a horse up for bid. John outbid Robert and Robert reached for a gun, only to be shot several times and killed by John Hardin, 11 OCT 1877. Robert had just married Susan Mary Boone 2 years prior & they had one son, Custer Clarence Holtshouser, who was born 28 JUL 1876 & died in Louisville KY 3 JAN 1920 & is buried in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery.
