James was a son of Richard Tennelly (1809-1887) and Mary Ann Burch (1815-1884).
He was married twice. First to Amanda A. Thompson and later to Lucinda Rebecca Borders. There were three children: Virgil Tennelly (1888-1968); Elbert Tyler Tennelly (1891-1968); and Mamie Tennelly ( -1955)
In the 1880 LaRue County Census for the Price district, James R. Tennelly was family 43. He was 29 years old, a Farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Amanda, was 28, and also born in Kentucky. They had no children. Amanda was a daughter of Stephen Thompson (1810-1872) and Ann Bowling (1812-1908) who are buried in St. Catherine Cemetery in New Haven.
In the 1900 LaRue County Census, James Tennelly was family 246. He was 49 years old and married 14 years to Lou, age 41 and mother of 3 children, 3 living. The children were: Ada, 19; Mary, 12; Virgil, 10; and Elbert, 8.
