Dale Payne, 77, of Austin, died Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Norton Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville. He was born April 21, 1944, in Barren County to the late Carl and Lottie Williams Payne. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Dale was a former teacher with the Nelson County School System and upon retiring enjoyed his time at his log cabin on Barren River Lake.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and Roger Payne.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Mattingly Payne; one daughter, Julie Payne, of Bardstown; one very special granddaughter, Annabelle Murphy; one sister, Brenda (Richard) Pook, of Glasgow; and several nieces and nephews.
In following Dales wishes, cremation was chosen by the family. Memorial visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home.

A Bardstown resident, Ann Mattingly Payne, age 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her home on August 5, 2025. She was born on July 28, 1950 to the late Joseph B. and Saragene Stiles Mattingly. She was a graduate of Bethlehem High School and University of Kentucky, completing not only her Bachelor’s degree but also her Masters and Rank One degrees in education. Ann was a retired teacher who influenced many lives during her many years at Old Kentucky Home Middle School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, L. Dale Payne.
She is survived by one daughter, Julie Stiles Payne and one granddaughter, Annabelle Claire Murphy, both of Bardstown. She is also survived by her siblings, Joseph B. (Myra) Mattingly of Charlotte, North Carolina, Gaylord (Barbara) Mattingly, Marigene (Benny) Hite and Karen (Billy) Gentry, all of Bardstown. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members also survive.
Ann had many hobbies that persisted throughout her life, including traveling not only locally but internationally with her friends, annual visits with her “Nazareth Girls”, season tickets for Broadway series, watching University of Kentucky sports and keeping the statistics, monthly Bunco games, playing cards with family, and of course, spending time with her granddaughter.
She was a devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bardstown and a regular member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, Kentucky.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ann Mattingly Payne will be 11:00 am Monday, August 11, 2025 at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with Fr. Jacob Zulu, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home Sunday from 12:00 noon-8:00 pm with a prayer service at 5:00 pm. Additional visitation will be Monday from 8:30-10:30 am. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Hospice of Nelson County. The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
