Served in the Revolutionary War as a mariner on the ship Defence, a Maryland vessel engaged in wartime service, an later as a fifer and a private in the Maryland Line.77

Moved to Poyyingers Creek area ca. 1790 with his two brothers William and Archibald. Early Pikes buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Will probated March 27, 1826.

John Pike died a short time before his will was probated on 27 mMarch 1826.  In addition to his son, John Jr., 4 other sons seem to be mentioned in the somewhat garbled copy of his will, Walter, Henry, Henry Samuel and one name non readable.  His widow, Rebecca, was bequeathed the use of his estate during her lifetime and was enjoined by her husband`s will to provide a home for their children.  His son, John, was given the choice of land, indicating he was the oldest son still at home (he was 18) and that he had no land of his own at the time of his father`s death.

In the 1830 census of Washington Co., John`s widow, Rebecca was reported as head of a house hold of 8 people.  She was between the ages of 60 and 70, born between 1760 and 1770.  As stipulated in her husband`s will, she was maintaining a home for their children.  While there was one male child between the ages of 5 and 10 (not hers) all the others were adults--4 males between the ages of 20 and 50 and two other females, one between 20 and 30 years of age, and one other between 50 and 60.

No marrige records in Nelson County Clerks Office.

Misc. Notes
Could possibly have been a Greenwell or a Mattingly.77

We did find out that Mariah Pike`s mother was Rebecca Gough, not Rebecca Mattingly.  Now we have a whole line of Gough relatives  too that I have posted on my tree.   The Goughs, Howards and Pikes were all neighbors in Washington Co.  Ann Gough was Rebecca Gough`s sister, and she was married to Thomas Howard, who donated the land for St. Thomas church.   The Gough line also ties into the Norris line, so now we are kin to that line too.  We couldn`t figure out why Austin and Alex Howard stood to inherit money from the Gough estate, but now it makes sense.77
