Mrs. Ella M. West, 90 of Woodstock died this morning following a long illness. Born in Browns Station, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mary Short. Her husband, Charles E. West died in 1953. Surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Charles Sena of New York Clty, and a son, William E. West of Woodstock: also seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchilden. Funeral services will be held Monday 2 p. m. at Lasher Funeral Home Inc., Woodstock. The Rev. Richard A. Mitchell,pastor of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Kingston of which she was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Woodstock Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Eleanor’s birthplace, Brown’s Station, NY was a village in New York but was flooded out of existence. It was located in the Esopus Valley of southeastern Ulster Co., NY, and it was submerged by the waters of the Ashokan Reservoir, an artificial lake built between 1906 and 1915 to supply fresh water to New York City.
Some of Eleanor’s brothers had set up an income stream to her from property they owned in Harlem, NY, base on 2nd mortgages. Whe the depression came all the mortgages defaulted and she lost her income. Charles was crippled and had not job, so the moved to Bearsville with Irwin’s family. Those days were seriously hard for the West family.
Family lived in Brooklyn during the early 1900’s.
1915 census list her birth year as 1877.
About 5’ tall and feisty.
She was also called Mabel.

Charles E. West of Woodstock died in Kingston on Thursday. Besides his widow, Mrs. Eleanor M. West, he leaves a son, William E. West of Woodstock, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles Sena of Brooklyn; also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services athe the Lasher Funeral Home in Woodstock on Monday, April 20, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodstock Cemetery.
Street car accident took use of his leg. Black sheep of the family. Heavy drinker.
He said that the West family moved to NY from the south.
His brother was a successful engineer who went to work one day and never returned. Perhaps fell into a river or construction area and was never heard from again.
Charles’ brothers had a professional family genealogy done in Westfield, NJ. Wests traced ancestors back to the Jamestown settlement, according to Billy West.
